One Year Bible – Week of 2/14
by staciekwatson on Feb.21, 2010, under Faith
Mark’s been a busy man so has asked me to blog this week’s reading highlights. As he stated last week, we see things a little differently. While he enjoyed reading all the “rules”, I found myself very thankful to be done with them for a while…though reading them sure makes you grateful you don’t have to follow them! While I’m enjoying the book of Acts, he’s a bit bored with it due to evidently having it drilled into him throughout elementary, high school, and college! I have no such baggage.
So here goes…
This week’s readings came from Acts 7 – 23, Proverbs 10:17 – 13:25. Highlights are as follows:
1. Stephen tells it like it is before the High Council. He sees his Christ and Savior in the final moments before death. How incredible is this?
2. It’s revealed to Peter that ALL are called to belief in the Risen Christ, not just the Jews.
3. Paul and Barnabas are commissioned to go abroad to teach the good news. They arrive back in Antioch with reports of how God had used them to open wide the doors of faith.
4. Those pesky Moses rules still tend to get in the way of the gospel for Jews and non-Jews alike.
5. Paul and Barnabas go their seperate ways due to a conflict over John Mark. Paul chooses Silas and ends up traveling to Macedonia to preach the good news to the Europeans.
6. Love the story of Paul and Silas landing in jail, earthquake throws open the doors, all prisoners accounted for, jailer and his family become believers.
7. Paul stayed two years in Ephesus finally taking his leave of them with warnings about wolves within their midst and without.
8. Paul, by way of the Holy Spirit, decides he wants to make it to Jerusalem then eventually to Rome. He’s detained when the crowd turns against him and he’s held prisoner until he can be brought before the High Council.
9. Mark’s been quoting some Proverbs…possibly making some up as he goes. Proverbs is a book everyone should read. They should teach it in grade school, high school, and college. We’d be a better nation for it.

Stacie is correct about Acts being drilled into me from birth! She is also right about Proverbs. I love them! Reading them in The Message has been awesome. Of course I’ve been quoting the ones I like best all week. Proverbs 12:4 was my favorite in The Message. Go read it! And to think she thought I made that up! HA!

We at 7&M are reading thru the Bible, too. Tell Mark I’m with you on the OT laws section!
Our readings are in chronological order, so we’re just about through wandering with the Jews–and feeling very uncomfortable about how much like them we tend to be. Jay Ussery got up this morning and said that he thinks he is not only a “Campbellite”, but an “Israelite”!
I read a chapter from Proverbs every day…thus reading through the whole book in a month and beginning again the next month. It never gets old and I mine new wisdom every time I read it. This idea was shared with me by a patient I work with and I have loved it! Mark, I’ll do my reading from the Message next month for some new perspective.
Miss you guys!

#9. Proverbs has 31 chapters. It’s great for daily projects since there are 31 days or less in each month. I love reading them. They always reveal something timely and new. One year I did a ‘verse of the day’ every day of the school year out of proverbs. Yep, I like Proverbs. And pumpkin pie.

Stacie,
This is my first time to read this blog. Glad I happened on to it through Facebook! I most enjoyed Acts while doing a Beth Moore series on Paul. It came alive to the degree that I didn’t want it to end. I wanted to know what happened next!
Last year I started a Bible reading blog on our church website. Then pregnancy set in! So I’m going to start where I left off last year. Feel free to read mine and comment as well.
